13-YEAR-OLD NAMBI RESCUED FROM CHILD MARRIAGE

With the help of the class teachers, we have been able to rescue Nambi (not real name) from marriage and get her back to school.

Nambi escaped from home after a small disagreement with her mother. She decided to go and stay with her married sister and while there, the husband of the sister brought his friend who started sexually abusing the girl and later took her to his home to stay there and be his wife. The 15-year-old Nambi accepted to stay with the man as opposed to going back to her original home to stay with her mother.

A month later

A month later, the mother approached the class teacher and explained how the girl had run away from home. RTU was then informed and we immediately came in to help rescue the girl. Together with the teacher and the mother, we informed the Chairman LC1 with whom we went to the home where the girl was married. After having a long conversation with the girl about the dangers of getting into marriage at her age and the benefits of education, she accepted to abandon the marriage and go back to school. She has been able to complete her primary level examinations and is currently waiting for her results then she can join secondary school.

We also organized one on one counseling services for the mother especially on how to raise adolescents and on positive parenting practices. Nambi is part of our School and community Clubs which have kept her around fellow young girls and working towards achieving her dream of becoming a Nurse in Future. It commitment and consistency to achieve the agenda to End Child Marriage. Many more girls like Nambi are looking forward to being rescued from early marriage.
