Through the Sexual Violence Against Children Coalition, together with other Partners we gathered at The Remnant Generation offices in Busega for Father’s Day celebrations. It was a heartfelt celebration of resilience, sacrifice and hope for boda-boda fathers, the men who navigate Kampala’s busy streets not just for a living but for the sake of their families. The day was filled with powerful stories that reminded us what true fatherhood means.
One father shared how life’s twists shaped his journey. He left school when his father could no longer afford the fees. His headteacher, instead of offering help, he told him to lay bricks to raise money for school only for that same headteacher to betray the trust of the community by impregnating a student and ending up in jail. That moment sealed the boy’s fate and cut short his education. But where some would see an end, this father saw a beginning.
For 15 years now, he has ridden a boda-boda and through hard work, discipline and determination, he has built a life many would admire, a house where his family finds shelter, rentals that provide extra income, plots of land and most importantly, children studying in good schools securing the very future he once feared losing. Beyond the stories, the day was rich in lessons, where one said “any additional woman is an additional problem.” It was a reminder that strength is not just found in muscle or voice but in the quiet choices fathers make daily to wake up early, to work hard and to give their children a better shot at life. The event closed on a high note as each father received a coupon for a full tank of fuel, a token of appreciation and a boost of motivation to keep riding, providing and inspiring. Strong men. Strong families. Strong communities.
