On Saturday, 19th July, the peaceful paths of Tanzania’s Pugu KazimZumbwi Reserve Forest echoed with footsteps of purpose as Dorah Kamwine, our champion, joined forces with partners and supporters in a symbolic hike for the girl child. The event, organized in collaboration with The Brighter Binti Foundation, was more than just a physical climb, it was a powerful movement to raise voices, break stigma and forge a path toward dignity and equality for girls across East Africa.
With every step taken through the forest, the team reinforced their commitment to girls’ empowerment. Reaching the peak was a declaration that when communities come together, mountains can be moved for the rights and well being of girls.
After the hike, the group made their way to Kisarawe Secondary School, where they were welcomed by eager students. There, the message was clear: change begins with courage and compassion. Addressing the students, the team leader of The Brighter Binti Foundation shared heartfelt words:
“This walk is a symbol of our unity for change. It’s not just about climbing mountains but about raising the voice of the girl child.”
Dorah Kamwine, ever a passionate voice for young girls, stood tall and spoke with warmth:
“Periods are natural. No girl should ever miss school because of her period,” she said. “And to the boys never shame a girl for something that is part of who we are. This is our nature and it must be respected.”
She thanked each participant for their commitment to the cause. As a powerful gesture of solidarity, every girl walked away with a pack of sanitary pads, a small item but a mighty symbol in the fight to end menstrual stigma. She also shared more information about Raising Teenagers Uganda and how the concept of Hiking for Girls was developed in 2017. 8 years later, today we see the Hikes across borders to Kenya and Tanzania. We are building a Movement for Generosity.
This wasn’t just a hike. It was a call to action. A reminder that supporting a girl child is not just about charity, it’s about justice. About ensuring every girl can walk into a classroom, into her future, with pride, dignity and power.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who partnered with us, stood with us and walked with us. Together, we rise. Together, we hike for her
