We partnered with Children’s Reach Out Uganda for a Reading camp event and this brought together children from different places, homes, cultures and backgrounds. Many children in Uganda do not have access to books at their homes or in their communities and for some, they only see books when they go to school. This is why it is very important to organize events like these, where children come together to read and discover the magic that books can bring into their lives. The event created a fun and safe space where children could read freely, share stories and learn in a way that was exciting and meaningful.
At the camp, children were welcomed with colorful books of all kinds for example storybooks, picture books and books about the world around them. Thanks to Old Books for New Eyes who donated these books and made available to all the children for free and ensured the children had good books to read, proving that even used books can create new chances when shared with love. It was beautiful to see the excitement on their faces as they picked up books and sat in groups to read. Some children read quietly on their own. Others took turns reading out loud. For many, it was their first time holding a storybook just for fun. The camp made reading feel like an adventure, not just something they do at school. One of the highlights of the day was the storytelling sessions where we tasked children to talk about the stories they read and even create their own. This session helped build their confidence, improve their speaking skills and boost their imagination. Reading is not just about learning new words. It helps children think better, dream bigger and believe in themselves.
We had volunteers who played a very big role in helping the children to read, listened to their stories and made them feel special. We believe that when children see that adults care about their learning, it gives them even more motivation to grow. In today’s world, reading is one of the most important skills a child can have. It helps with schoolwork, yes also helps children to think clearly, understand others and find their own voice. A child who reads is a child who can lead because readers are leaders.
This camp was just one day but the impact will last a long time. It reminded us that everyone can help children fall in love with reading. If you have old books, consider donating them. If you have free time, volunteer to read with children in your community. If you are a parent or teacher, make reading part of your child’s daily routine. We also ask leaders and education partners to invest in more reading spaces and support programs that bring books closer to children in rural and urban communities. These young readers are future teachers, doctors, leaders and writers. When we give them the tools to read, we give them the power to dream and achieve great things. Some times acts as small as helping a child to read a book can help to create change, in their lives and communities.
