THE POWER OF COLLABORATION: REFLECTIONS FROM THE 10TH EAST AFRICA PHILANTHROPY CONFERENCE.

The future of philanthropy in Africa will be defined not by how much we receive but by what we build, sustain and own together. From 16th to 20th June, our Team Leader Hope Nankunda had the privilege of representing us in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the 10th East Africa Philanthropy Conference. This convening brought together philanthropists, development practitioners, community leaders and changemakers committed to advancing sustainable solutions across the region. It served as a powerful reminder that in a time of global uncertainty, collaboration, resilience and locally driven solutions are more important than ever.

Day One set the tone with a thought-provoking TED Address on “The State of the Economic System,” highlighting a concerning trend of more organizations are closing than opening. Conversations throughout the day centred on the growing funding crisis, program disruptions and the urgent need for organizations to rethink sustainability. The message was clear, long-term impact requires intentional resilience strategies, diversified funding models and stronger institutional foundations.

On Day Two, discussions deepened as members were challenged to rethink the very foundations of philanthropy and development. A powerful reflection emerged as external funding were to disappear only what has been built and sustained locally would remain. This sparked critical dialogue around ownership, shifting from donor dependence to community-driven systems and the importance of building structures that support generational impact rather than short-term results.

The final days of the conference focused on connection and strengthening partnerships across the region. It was inspiring to witness active participation from delegates across East Africa including Uganda as they contributed to shaping conversations on systems change, local leadership and sustainable development. As the conference concluded, one message stood out was true progress lies in collective action. The insights, partnerships and commitments formed during this gathering will continue to guide efforts toward building resilient communities and a more equitable future for all.
