A DAY AT NAKIVALE: STORIES OF HOPE, RESILIENCE AND THE POWER OF SHOWING UP.

Last month , our team journeyed to Nakivale Refugee Settlement where we spent the day with children and adolescents at Hope Training Centre Nakivale-  a place of hope, learning and strength for young people facing unimaginable challenges.

Upon arrival, we were met by children who, despite lacking even the most basic necessities like food because they informed us that they no longer receive food since last year which is not good for children of their age. The welcomed us with heartfelt songs and poems. Their words painted vivid pictures of pain, perseverance and dreams that refuse to die. It was a moment that humbled us all, a reminder that in the face of adversity, the human spirit can still sing.

We came bearing gifts including reading materials and clothing donated by our partners at Daffodils Academy, delicious cookies from Glen’s Pastry Home and lots of smiles and hugs which they enjoyed the most. Though small, these tokens of love were received with much gratitude. We extend our deepest thanks to everyone who contributed, your generosity planted seeds of hope.

As we left Nakivale, our hearts grew heavier. We saw more than 15 buses arriving, each one filled with more refugees seeking safety, seeking survival. The numbers continue to rise and so must our compassion. It is clear: the need is overwhelming, but so is the call to care.

At Raising Teenagers Uganda, we believe that no child should be forgotten. We are committing to standing with refugee youth, to remind them they are seen, they are valued and they are not alone. We call on everyone, friends, partners and fellow citizens to join us. Let us continue to reach out, to give, to listen and to act. Because hope begins when someone shows up. May God have mercy and may we never tire of doing good.
