As the world pushes for gender equality and human rights, addressing menstrual stigma is crucial in ensuring that no girl or woman is left behind. Breaking the barriers surrounding menstruation requires collective efforts like access to education, policy changes, community engagement and access to menstrual products. By challenging societal norms and taboos, we can create a future where menstruation is treated as a normal and healthy aspect of life.
Menstruation is a natural biological process experienced by millions of women and girls worldwide, yet it remains one of the most stigmatized topics in many societies. The stigma surrounding menstruation has many consequences, affecting girls’ education, self-esteem and overall wellbeing. In Uganda and many other parts of the world, myths and taboos about menstruation continue to create barriers that limit opportunities for girls and women.
Breaking menstrual stigma is not just about normalising conversations about periods, it is about promoting dignity, ensuring access to menstrual products and advocating for policy changes that support menstrual health. Through our annual #Hike4GirlsUg campaign, we have been able to support young women and girls from the rural areas of Uganda with menstrual products. It is unfortunate that there are women and girls who are still held back by their period and some other factors like cultural and societal norms, it is even worse on the young schoolgirls who end up missing out on school because of their period. We envision a world where girls and women manage their period with confidence, without fear and discrimination.
Raising Teenagers Uganda is committed to raising awareness, supporting the underprivileged women and girls with menstrual products and advocating for policy change through our initiatives like the annual #Hike4GirlsUg campaign. This campaign is more than just an event, it is a movement that brings together individuals, organizations and menstruation enthusiasts to advocate for menstrual health. Every year, we hike to create awareness about menstrual stigma and with support from partners, individuals and civil society organisations we raise resources to support underprivileged girls with menstrual kits.
When we break these barriers and push beyond boundaries, we pave the way for a future where menstruation is no longer a source of shame but a symbol of strength and resilience. It is time to move beyond the stigma and create a world where every menstruating individual is empowered to thrive. Let us commit to breaking barriers around menstruation because menstrual health is a right, not a privilege.
