DONOR VISIT TO NAMAYUMBA: SEEING THE IMPACT FIRST-HAND

When you listen to Sharifah talk about her dream of becoming a journalist, you cannot miss the confidence in her voice but that confidence did not come easy. On 27th April 2026, we hosted a visit from Girls First Fund, a partner that has supported our work to end child marriage in Namayumba Sub-County since 2019. The visit was about going into the community and seeing what the work actually looks like in people’s lives.

Through home visits, our guest had the chance to meet the girl, the family and community members we work with. These conversations were honest. People spoke about the challenges they are still facing but also the progress they have made. It was a reminder that change does not happen overnight but step by step with the right support.

One of the moments that stood out most was meeting Sharifah. When we first met her, she was close to dropping out of school even though she loved being there. She would dance at local functions to earn money to support her family and try to pay her school fees. Today, she is in Senior Five. She shared her story openly her struggles, her journey and her dream of becoming a journalist. Her story shows what can happen when a girl is given a real chance.

The visit also showed how important the community is in this work. Local leaders have played a big role especially in improving learning environments at places like Bukondo Primary School. We also spent time with Mumbejja our community mobilizer and whistleblower who continues to identify cases, support families and make sure girls are protected. She is a trusted voice in the community.

What stood out clearly is that this work is not done by one person or one organization. It takes everyone, partners, leaders, families and the community. We are grateful to Girls First Fund for walking this journey with us. Together, we continue to work towards a future where every girl is safe, supported and able to follow her dreams.
