HELPING GIRLS DISCOVER THEIR DREAMS THROUGH CAREER GUIDANCE AT BISHOP NANKYAMA MEMORIAL SECONDARY SCHOOL

Every young person has dreams for the future but sometimes they need someone to help them understand their abilities, explore different abilities and believe in what they can achieve. Through the “Empower to Rise: Building Life Skills for Adolescent Girls” project through which we are supported by Girl Rising, we are creating spaces where girls can learn, grow and gain the confidence they need to make positive choices about their lives.

We recently held a career guidance session at Bishop Nankyama Memorial Secondary School, where we gave students an opportunity to learn more about different career paths, reflect on their interests and think about the future they want to create for themselves. During the session, we encouraged them to understand that choosing a career is not just about following trends or what others expect of them. We taught them the importance of knowing their strengths, exploring their interests, working hard and making decisions that align with their talents and dreams. The session also helped students understand that success comes with preparation, patience, commitment and continuous learning. We reminded them that the skills they develop today will support them not only in their careers but also in everyday life.

We had open conversations and shared experiences with the students, which gave them the chance to ask questions, express their thoughts and gain guidance on how they can prepare themselves for different opportunities ahead. The session encouraged them to dream bigger and believe that their background or current circumstances should not limit what they can achieve. We emphasized that every student has unique abilities and potential. With the right support, information and determination, they can make choices that lead them closer to their goals.

We believe that empowering girls means giving them the confidence, knowledge and support to take charge of their futures. Through this project, we continue to walk alongside girls as they discover their strengths, build their confidence and prepare for a future filled with possibilities. When girls are given the opportunity to dream, learn and grow, they are empowered to rise and create a better future for themselves and their communities.
