Inspiring Hope by Empowering Teenage Mothers

Most times, teenage mothers face stigma, isolation and lost opportunities which affects their lives and those of their children. But there is something powerful about creating spaces where they are seen, heard and uplifted. During our recent visit and engagement with teenage mothers, we held a meaningful dialogue with them which not only inspired them but reminded us all of the resilience that lies within a supported girl.

We had a session where we shared words of hope and encouragement with the young mothers. It was more than just encouragement; it helped to restore hope and reminding the young mothers of their worth and help them stay focused as they learn life changing skills. The environment was warm, filled with energy and charged with purpose. The highlight of the day came during a motivational talk from our team leader, madam Hope Nankunda as shared her personal story of growth. She spoke about the struggles she faced growing up, which were filled with so many moments of self-doubt and financial hardship. Her story of rising from difficulty to become a mentor and changemaker moved many in the room. She reminded the young mothers that their current situation does not define their future. “Your dreams are still valid,” she said passionately.

“Even with a baby on your back, you still have a destiny to fulfill.” Some of the girls had never heard someone speak so openly about struggle and success. That connection rooted in honesty and lived experience brought laughter and a sense of renewed strength among them.

We also had a session on economic empowerment and each teenage mother received a chick as they venture into poultry farming. While simple, this gesture symbolized new beginnings. With care and commitment, these chicks can grow into a small source of income, offering food security and a pathway to economic independence.

It was a reminder that transformation often starts small. As we concluded the day, it was clear that something had shifted. The girls stood taller, laughed louder, and held their chicks with care and pride. We didn’t come to save them, we came to walk with them, to remind them of what they already carry: STRENGTH, VALUE and the POWER to change their narrative. We are confident that these girls are rising.
