A girl’s voice can inspire change, her dreams can shape the future and when girls unite, entire communities can transform. On 6th October 2026, we took our annual Unite For Girls event to Raise Up A Child Primary School in Namayumba which became a centre of inspiration, learning and empowerment as it hosted the fourth edition in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child under the theme “When Girls Unite, Communities Transform.” The event brought together 150 pupils from three neighbouring schools. Raise Up A Child Primary School, Bukondo Chance School and Leah Junior School alongside 15 civil society organisations, community leader, teachers and the school administration. They created a platform dedicated to celebrating girls, amplifying young people’s voices and strengthening collective efforts to protect and empower every girl.
The event was filled with powerful conversations, inspiring performances, poetry, learning and meaningful connections that highlighted the strength, resilience and potential of girls. One of the most impactful moments was a skit presented by partner organisation Extend Uganda which illustrated the devastating consequences of child marriage. Through the performance, pupils witnessed how forcing a girl into early marriage can rob her of her childhood, interrupt her education and prevent her from pursuing her dreams. The skit sparked important discussions about children’s rights and reinforced the message that every girl deserves to be protected from harm, remain in school, enjoy her childhood and have the freedom to make decisions about her future. It was a reminder that protecting girls requires communities to challenge harmful practices and create safe environments where they can thrive.
Young people also took centre stage, demonstrating the importance of listening to children and giving them opportunities to express themselves. Through a powerful poem titled “The Voice of a Teenager,” pupils of Raise Up A Child Primary School called upon parents, teachers and community leaders to protect children, respect their rights and guide them with kindness rather than violence. They also encouraged fellow young people to make responsible choices, recognising that individual decisions can have far reaching consequences. Their message was clear: “Listen to us. Protect us. Guide us.” These words captured the heart of Unite For Girls reminding everyone present that children are not merely future leaders but active voices in shaping the communities they live in today. When young people are given the microphone, they offer valuable insights into their experiences, challenges, hopes and dreams.
This year’s event was deliberately held at Raise Up A Child Primary School in Namayumba to bring the conversation closer to the girls, their everyday experiences and the communities where lasting change must begin. Rather than speaking about girls from a distance, Unite For Girls created a space where they could participate, learn, connect, share their aspirations and feel celebrated alongside those committed to their well being. The gathering demonstrated that meaningful transformation requires more than words, it calls for collective action from families, schools, community leaders, civil society organisations and development partners. The organisers expressed heartfelt appreciation to all partners, supporters and well-wishers whose time, resources, expertise and dedication made the event possible. Their participation demonstrated the power of partnership in creating opportunities for children to learn, speak confidently and envision brighter futures.
As the fourth #UniteForGirls event came to a close, its message extended far beyond the school grounds: investing in girls is investing in the future of entire communities. The conversations shared, lessons learned and voices raised in Namayumba served as a renewed call to keep girls in school, protect them from child marriage and other forms of violence, challenge harmful social practices and provide them with education, mentorship and opportunities to realise their potential. The event also reaffirmed that girls deserve more than a seat at the table, they deserve the opportunity to shape the decisions that affect their lives. With continued commitment and collaboration, the seeds planted on 6th October can grow into lasting change for girls, families and generations to come. As Namayumba demonstrated, when communities listen to girls, stand up for their rights and invest in their dreams, transformation becomes possible. When we unite for girls, we build stronger communities and a brighter future for everyone.
