What began as a simple walk in 2017 has grown into a movement that brings together individuals, organizations, partners and communities with one shared purpose: to ensure that every girl can manage her menstruation with dignity and continue pursuing her education without barriers.
This year’s hike took us to Kisoro District, bringing together over 100 participants who climbed Mt. Mgahinga not only for the adventure but for a cause greater than themselves. The journey highlighted an important reality: while menstruation is a natural part of life, many girls continue to face challenges due to limited access to menstrual products, stigma and inadequate support systems. For many participants, the hike was not just about reaching the summit. It was about using every step as a symbol of commitment to girls’ rights and menstrual dignity.
Before beginning the journey, hikers took time to reflect on why they were part of the movement. Each person carried a unique story and personal reason for joining. Some were motivated by a desire to support girls’ education, others by a passion for menstrual health advocacy, while others simply wanted to contribute to a cause that creates meaningful change. Although their reasons differed, they were united by one belief: no girl should be held back because of her period.
The hike created an opportunity for conversations around menstrual health, helping to challenge the silence and stigma that often surrounds menstruation. By openly discussing these issues, participants helped normalize conversations about periods and encouraged communities to see menstrual health as a shared responsibility.
The success of this year’s #Hike4GirlsUg was made possible through the commitment of partners, supporters and volunteers who believed in the mission. From organizations that supported us with menstrual supplies to partners who supported logistics and participant experiences, every contribution played a role in making the event impactful. Our partners’ support truly showed the power of collaboration in creating sustainable change and made this year’s hike meaningful. Whether through providing resources, ensuring hikers were supported throughout the journey or amplifying the message around menstrual dignity, each partner contributed to the larger vision.
Beyond the mountain trails, the true impact of the hike was felt through the engagement with girls in Kisoro. We visited Seseme Girls Secondary School where girls received sanitary pads and had also an opportunity to interact with the hikers. The engagement was a reminder that the purpose of the hike extends far beyond the event itself. The support provided was not simply about distributing menstrual products, it was about restoring confidence, promoting dignity and reminding girls that their education and dreams matter.
When girls lack access to menstrual products, the consequences can affect their class attendance, participation and confidence in school. Supporting menstrual health is therefore not only a health issue, it is an education issue and an equality issue. Through initiatives like #Hike4GirlsUg, communities are encouraged to recognize that investing in girls’ menstrual health is investing in their future.
One of the most powerful aspects of this year’s hike was the diversity of voices that came together. The event brought together young people, women, men, organizations and community members who all played different roles in advancing the cause. Men who participated showed that menstrual health is not only a conversation for women and girls. It is a community responsibility that requires everyone’s involvement. Partners and supporters demonstrated that change happens when people choose to stand together. Every voice, every contribution and every action added strength to the movement.
The hike became a space where stories were shared, connections were created and commitments were strengthened.
To every hiker who climbed Mt. Mgahinga, thank you for choosing to walk with purpose.
To every partner who supported the journey, thank you for believing in the vision and helping transform it into reality.
To the volunteers, organizers and community members who worked behind the scenes, your dedication made this experience possible.
A special appreciation goes to the on-ground team in Kisoro led by the team at Uganda Redcross Society for the coordination and commitment which greatly contributed to the success of the event.
Although the hike ended, the mission continues. The trails may no longer carry the footsteps of hikers, but the conversations started, partnerships strengthened and lives touched will continue to create impact. The hike serves as a reminder that change does not always begin with large actions. Sometimes, it begins with one step, one conversation or one person choosing to care. The mountain was climbed, but the greater goal remains: creating a world where every girl can menstruate with dignity, stay in school and pursue her dreams without limitations.
